Caring for a bouquet of roses involves providing the right conditions to help them thrive and last longer. Follow these tips to ensure your roses remain beautiful for as long as possible.
Initial Preparation
Trim the Stems: Using sharp scissors or a knife, cut about 1-2cm off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption and helps prevent stem blockage.
Remove Foliage: Strip any leaves that will be submerged in water. This prevents bacterial growth, which can shorten the life of your roses.
Watering
Use Clean Water: Fill a clean vase with fresh, lukewarm water. Avoid using cold water as it can shock the flowers.
Add Flower Food: If provided, mix the flower food according to the instructions. Flower food contains nutrients and antibacterial agents that help prolong the life of your roses.
Water Level: Ensure the water covers the stems but does not touch the flowers. Check the water level daily and top up as necessary, as roses can absorb a significant amount of water.
Placement
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Place your bouquet in a cool, well-lit area, but not in direct sunlight. Excessive heat can cause the flowers to wilt faster.
Keep Away from Heat Sources: Avoid positioning the roses near radiators, fans, or any other sources of heat that can dry them out.
Opt for a Stable Environment: Avoid placing the bouquet in drafty areas or near rippling curtains from air conditioning or heating.
Maintenance
Re-cut the Stems: Every few days, re-cut the stems at an angle to ensure they continue to absorb water. This is especially important if you notice the stems have become slimy or discoloured.
Remove Wilting Flowers: As some roses begin to wilt, remove them from the bouquet to maintain the overall appearance and health of the remaining flowers.
Change the Water: Replace the water entirely every two to three days to keep it fresh. Clean the vase as well to remove any bacteria.
Longevity Tips
Consider a Cold Water Soak: If your roses are starting to wilt, a quick soak in cold water for a few hours can often refresh them.
Use Flower Preservatives: If available, commercial flower preservatives can help provide nutrients and prolong vase life.
By following these guidelines, your rose bouquet will remain vibrant and lovely, brightening your space for days to come.
