I Spent an Afternoon Lost in 150,000 Plush Flowers on Hong Kong's Harbourfront — And You Need to Do the Same
CJ Hendry's Flower Market is here for four days only, it's completely free, and it might be the most beautiful thing you see all year
OK so I need to talk about this because honestly it's been living rent-free in my head since I first heard about it and now that it's actually happening I cannot stop thinking about it.
CJ Hendry — if you don't already follow her, please stop what you're doing and go do that right now — is bringing her iconic Flower Market installation to Hong Kong this March. Asian debut. Central Harbourfront. Free entry. A flower to take home. I genuinely cannot think of a better way to spend a Thursday afternoon.
Wait, Who Is CJ Hendry?
Okay quick backstory for the uninitiated. CJ Hendry is an Australian artist based in New York who first went viral for her hyperrealistic drawings — we're talking ballpoint pen illustrations so detailed and lifelike that your brain simply refuses to accept a human made them. She has since graduated to creating these enormous, immersive installations that are basically the art world's answer to a main character moment.
Previous projects include recreating an entire New York flower market in Brooklyn and filling a swimming pool with 90,000 objects in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Yes, really. The woman does not do things by halves.
So What Actually Is Flower Market?
Picture this: a greenhouse pavilion right on Victoria Harbour, stuffed floor to ceiling with over 150,000 plush flowers across 26 different designs. Every single one is made with the kind of obsessive attention to texture and detail that Hendry is known for — so even though they're soft and tactile and completely oversized, they feel somehow incredibly real.
The harbour glimmers beyond the glass. The colours are absolutely unreal. And the whole thing has this dreamlike quality that makes you feel like you've wandered into the world's most aesthetically pleasing florist — if that florist had been designed by someone with absolutely no interest in restraint whatsoever. In the best possible way.
I'm already planning my outfit around the colour palette, not going to lie.
The Hong Kong Bits That Make It Special
Two pieces were made exclusively for this visit and they're genuinely lovely. The Henderson Flower was created to celebrate Henderson Land's 50th anniversary — they're the ones making this whole thing happen, and honestly, respect — and it ties in beautifully with The Henderson tower nearby, which has this gorgeous petal-inspired architecture that you've definitely noticed on the skyline even if you didn't know what it was called.
Then there's the Bauhinia, which — if you live here, you already know — is Hong Kong's emblem flower. Seeing it rendered in Hendry's signature plush style is one of those moments that's equal parts art installation and love letter to the city. It got me, I won't pretend otherwise.
Art Basel Who?
Flower Market lands right in the middle of Art Month, which means Hong Kong in March is already buzzing with gallery openings, collector dinners and the general chaos of Art Basel week. It's a lot. It can feel intimidating if contemporary art isn't your usual scene.
And that's exactly why Flower Market is such a gift. It's the perfect entry point — no art world credentials required, no dress code, no pressure. Just genuinely beautiful things to look at, a harbour view, and a free flower at the end of it. Whether you're a seasoned Basel regular or you're just here for the vibes, this one delivers.
Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
When: 19–22 March 2026 — that's Thursday to Sunday, so yes, you have the weekend but don't sleep on it.
Where: AIA Vitality Park, 33 Man Kwong Street, Central Harbourfront. Right on the water. You'll see it.
Cost: Completely free — but you must register in advance online and bring your e-ticket. Don't be the person who shows up without one.
The flower situation: Every registered visitor gets one complimentary plush flower to take home. If you want more (and you will want more), they're HK$38 each. Extremely reasonable for something that's going to live on your desk forever.
Getting there: Hong Kong Station Exit F or Central Station Exit A, then just follow the harbourfront. The walk is genuinely lovely so leave yourself a few extra minutes.
My Honest Advice
Register the second you finish reading this. Weekend slots are going to go fast — like, embarrassingly fast — and if you have any flexibility at all, a weekday visit is going to feel so much more relaxed and spacious. Either way, give yourself at least an hour, wear something you feel good in, and maybe think about where you're going for drinks after because the harbourfront at sunset is not something you'll want to rush away from.
This is four days only. Free entry. One of the world's most exciting artists doing something made specifically for Hong Kong. If you miss it you will be upset with yourself, and I say that with complete love.
Go register. Right now. I'll wait.
